ABOUT THE SPEAKER:

Larry EchoHawk was born in Cody, Wyoming, and raised in Farmington, New Mexico. He earned a football scholarship to Brigham Young University and was the starting defensive safety in every game during his junior and senior seasons. After graduating from BYU in 1970, he earned a Juris Doctor Degree at the University of Utah in 1973.

In 1977, Mr. EchoHawk was hired as the senior attorney for the largest Indian tribe in the State of Idaho, the Shoshone-Bannock Tribes, located on the Fort Hall Indian Reservation. He served in that capacity for more than eight years.

In 1982, in his first run for public office, Mr. EchoHawk was elected to the Idaho House of Representatives. He served two terms before becoming the elected Prosecuting Attorney for Bannock County. In November of 1990 Larry was elected as Attorney General for the State of Idaho and became the first American Indian in U.S. history elected as a state attorney general. After 12 years in elective office in Idaho he served for 15 years as a Professor of Law at Brigham Young University’s J. Reuben Clark Law School, teaching Criminal Law, Evidence, Criminal Procedure, Criminal Trial Practice, and Federal Indian Law.

In 2009, Mr. EchoHawk was nominated by President Barack Obama, and confirmed by the United States Senate, to serve as the Assistant Secretary for Indian Affairs in the United States Department of the Interior, the highest-ranking official in the federal government with full-time responsibility for Indian affairs. In this capacity he served as the representative of the President of the United States to 565 tribal governments.

On March 31, 2012, Mr. EchoHawk was sustained as a General Authority Seventy for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. During his service in the First Quorum of the Seventy, he served in the Area Presidency of the Philippines. In October 2018, he was released from full-time church service and assumed Emeritus General Authority status.

Since October of 2018, Mr. EchoHawk has served as Special Counsel and Advisor to the Governor, Lt. Governor, and Attorney General of the State of Utah for Indian affairs.

Larry J. EchoHawk is a member of the Pawnee Nation of Oklahoma and served honorably in the U.S. Marine Corps. He and his wife, Terry, have six children, thirty grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

To enter Kingsbury Hall, ALL GUESTS MUST HAVE A TICKET, INCLUDING CHILDREN. Tickets have been distributed to graduating students but extra tickets are available at the information desks inside the College of Law.

    • All guests must be ticketed – this includes children and babes in arms (venue rules, not ours). Graduating students do NOT need a ticket to attend.
    • Don’t misplace these tickets; they cannot be reprinted.

Anyone requiring an interpreter (ASL or foreign language) or reserved ADA seating, please contact Kris Monty at by Friday, April 28, 2024 for proper accommodations.

PARKING & SHUTTLE SERVICE

Parking
Parking will be available as indicated on this map.

Families/guests are encouraged to drop graduates off at Kingsbury Hall by 8:45 a.m. to prevent late arrivals for the processional line-up.

Accessible Parking
For a map of all accessible parking options on campus, visit the campus map and select the “Accessible” option from the map Features drop-down menu. Accessible parking near Kingsbury Hall is first come, first-served.

Shuttle Services
Shuttle Services will be available around the College of Law building and golf carts will be available at the Chemistry Parking Lot to shuttle people who need transportation to Kingsbury Hall. Shuttle Services and Golf Carts will be in operation beginning at 8:30 a.m. The return shuttle will be from Kingsbury Hall to the S.J. Quinney College of Law east entrance for the reception. Shuttle service will end at 1 p.m.

LIVE STREAMING
The commencement ceremony will be streamed live on the S.J. Quinney College of Law YouTube channel.

CONVOCATION PROGRAMS
Virtual programs will be available for guests. A link to the program will be available on this webpage and at the ceremony. Graduates will be provided a commemorative printed program at the Convocation Ceremony.
