Cost of Attendance: 2024-2025 JD First-Year Students
The 1L Cost of Attendance (COA) budget below is for the nine-month academic year and is set by the University Office of Scholarships and Financial Aid. Students during the Summer term have a different COA for that term. The COA for a student with children under the age of 12 may be increased, depending on the age of each child, for child day-care expenses. The “Total” figure at the bottom of each column is the maximum amount that a student in that status may qualify for in financial aid. A student may not receive more than that total amount in a combination of loans, scholarships, work-study, and/or tuition waivers. The amounts for the five categories of costs in the chart are established using federal guidelines that refer to a variety of sources in determining the COA for an average student.

University of Utah Residency Policy for S.J. Quinney College of Law Students
University of Utah’s residency policy is based Utah State Law 53B-8-102 and the Board of Regents R512, Policies and Procedures. Students attending the S.J. Quinney College of Law who are coded as a non-resident for tuition purposes are required to pay non-resident tuition. Law students classified as non-residents are not eligible for residency reclassification once they begin their law school studies. For first-year law students, the beginning of law school studies is the first day of Orientation in August. Non-resident students will pay tuition at the non-resident rate for the duration of their law school studies; this includes periods of approved “Leaves of Absence.” This University institutional residency policy supersedes all other means of qualifying for residency reclassification (as outlined in the Board of Regents Policy R512), except for the designated exceptions found in R512.6.
Reclassification of Residency Prior to Enrollment
For law students who question their classification as a non-residents, or who believe they will qualify for Utah resident status before their law school studies begin, they may complete the Residency Reclassification Application available on the University web site at: admissions.utah.edu/apply/residency/. Also, the University’s Institutional Policy for residency reclassification is on the same web landing page. The University Admissions Office may be of assistance and can be reached at (801) 581-8761.
Please Note: Residency applications will not be processed after the published deadlines. Also, please be aware that obtaining supporting documentation (Utah driver’s license, Utah car registration, etc.) for the residency reclassification must be completed by the published deadlines. These deadlines are earlier than the residency application submission deadlines. For example, to apply for fall semester reclassification, one must obtain supporting documentation by May 1 and the application submission deadline is July 1.
