AWARDS & FELLOWSHIPS
The following scholarship, fellowship, and award options are available to first-, second-, and third-year environmental law students. Additional options are available from the College of Law or the university’s graduate school.
ESRR Endowment Fund for the Wallace Stegner Center Scholarship
The ESRR Endowment Fund for the Wallace Stegner Center provides scholarships to students who have a demonstrated interest in environmental law and conservation, with preference given to individuals who have worked or are interested in working for advocacy organizations.
O’Hara Honors Program
The Patrick O’Hara Honors Program, established in Patrick's memory by his family and friends, provides comprehensive financial support and mentoring to promising natural resources law students and young lawyers. The program contains three parts: a summer clerkship with the Natural Resources Division of the Utah Attorney General's Office; a law school merit scholarship for the 3L year; and a two-year position practicing natural resources law with the Utah Attorney General's Office after graduation. Calvin A. and Hope F. Eccles Behle Fellowship
The Calvin A. and Hope F. Eccles Behle Fellowship and the Grace Clayton Behle Fellowship are separate programs established in honor of pioneers in natural resource law and land management. Together, the fellowships fund multiple student research fellows, who are placed with individual faculty members engaged in environmental and natural resource law scholarship. Student research fellows receive a cash stipend for their service.
Edward W. and Betha J. Clyde Fund
In 1998, Betha J. Clyde made a gift to the University of Utah College of Law to support student participation in Wallace Stegner Center programs and related natural resources law classes and activities. The fund carries Betha's name and that of her late husband, Edward W. Clyde (JD ’42), a highly regarded water law expert. Learn more »
Clark-Dewsnup Fellowship
Calvin E. Clark (JD ’56) originally funded the Clark-Dewsnup Fellowship to honor his good friend and classmate Richard L. Dewsnup, the first solicitor general of Utah and an outstanding natural resources lawyer. Following Cal Clark's passing, the Dewsnup Fellowship was renamed the Clark-Dewsnup Fellowship. The fellowship recipient receives a grant for the second year of law school and a paid summer clerkship with the Natural Resources Division of the Attorney General’s Office. Learn more »
Reza Ali Khazeni Memorial Fellowship
The Khazeni Fellowship was established by the family of Reza Ali Khazeni in memory of their son, who was deeply interested in nature and preservation of the environment. The fellowship provides an award to enable a student to spend a summer working for a non-governmental environmental advocacy organization. Learn more »
The W.J. & Neil R. Mitchell Family Endowed Merit Fellowship
Neil R. Mitchell established the Mitchell Fellowship in 1994 to honor his grandfather William J. Mitchell, a member of the first College of Law graduating class (1913), and other members of the Mitchell family. The Mitchell Fellowship is awarded to a student who demonstrates extraordinary promise in the study of law and whose undergraduate or other graduate study represents distinction in a science discipline.
G.W. Anderson Oil and Gas Scholarship
The G.W. Anderson Oil and Gas Scholarship is provided through the generosity of the Anderson Hatch Foundation and the law firm of Lear & Lear PLLC. It honors G.W. Anderson, a pioneer in Utah’s oil and gas industry who was well known for his dedication, hard-work, and love for his community. The scholarship was designed to introduce students specifically to the oil and gas industry. The summer internship at Lear & Lear will include a broad exposure to oil and gas law.
The Wallace Stegner Center Student Writing Award
The Wallace Stegner Center Student Writing Award annually provides a cash award of $1,000 to the student who authors the best paper on an environmental or natural resource law topic during the academic year. Professors nominate students based on papers submitted for courses, seminars, or directed research. The awards committee makes the final selection from the faculty nominations.
