For decades the Central Wasatch Mountains have been the location for a remarkable natural treasure, intense use, and fighting over what the solutions may be for myriad interests. In this Green Bag session, Ralph Becker will explore the background, context, and issues today for this unique and treasured area.
Ralph Becker has been using and working continuously on matters involving the Central Wasatch Mountains for more than four decades. He looks forward to a thoughtful session on how this area can retain its fabulous qualities and address seemingly intractable issues.
ABOUT THE SPEAKER:
Ralph Becker is a University of Utah law school and planning program graduate. He serves as Executive Director of the Central Wasatch Commission, an interlocal governmental entity formed to protect the Central Wasatch Mountains and implement the Mountain Accord.
He is a 48-year resident of Salt Lake City where he served two terms as mayor (2008-2015). He served in the Utah State Legislature as a member of the House of Representatives for 11 years (1996-2007), including five years as House Minority Leader. In 2015, Ralph served as President of the National League of Cities.
In 1985, he co-founded and worked for 22 years at Bear West, a community, resource management, public lands and environmental planning consulting firm. Ralph was the State Planning Coordinator for Governor Matheson, 1982-1985.
He speaks internationally on governance, sustainability, climate change, planning, and public lands, and has authored numerous publications. He served as a Leadership in Government Fellow with the Open Society Foundation in 2016.
Ralph was an adjunct professor in the University of Utah College of Architecture and Planning for 25 years. Ralph holds an undergraduate degree from the University of Pennsylvania.
