An RSO is a student-led group officially registered with the University's Student Leadership & Involvement (SLI) office. Recognition grants access to various benefits, including funding opportunities, event planning support, and campus resources.

Starting a New RSO


To establish a new RSO, ensure the following:

  • Leadership: Minimum of three enrolled students in leadership roles, including a President and Treasurer.

  • Organization Name: Choose a unique name for your group.

  • RSO Classification: The College of Law only has one sponsored org, which is Student Bar Association. All other student organizations fall under registered.
  • Constitution: Draft and submit a constitution for annual recognition.

  • Logo: It must follow the logo/branding guidelines associated with each RSO category.
  • Registration and Training:

    • Complete SLI's registration and training. This is an annual requirement. Reregistration of an organization starts in spring.

    • Complete the College of Law's student leadership training.  This is an annual requirement.

RSO Classifications and Policy


Familiarize yourself with Rule 6-401A and Rule 6-401B, these University Rules have been developed to explain the University’s recognition process and to clearly establish, define, and formalize the relationship shared between recognized student organizations and the University of Utah.

Registered

These organizations are recognized by the University, but are not part of the University and operate as a separate entity:

    • Not a part of the University
    • No use of university trademarks
    • May use the "At Utah" logo set and verbiage
    • No financial accounts through the University
    • No Advisor required, but possible
    • Can receive donations BUT cannot accept donations on behalf of the University. Individuals who choose to donate will not receive any type of donation receipt under University tax ID number.
    • Priority on-campus space reservations
    • Access to ASUU funding
    • Required trainings for officers (and advisors if applicable)

Sponsored

The College of Law only has one sponsored student organization, which is the Student Bar Association (SBA):

    • A part of the university and sponsored by the College of Law
    • Advisor has responsibilities assigned
    • May have a dedicated work space
    • Use of University marks
    • All financial accounts through the University
    • Donations under University tax ID number
    • Contracting as the University
    • Access to ASUU funding
    • Required trainings for officers (and advisors if applicable)
    • Must be compliant with House Bill 261
