Lawyers for the Lake

Great Salt Lake’s legal challenges are complex—and urgent. Addressing policy development, water law, water rights assistance, business opportunities, and funding barriers requires not just good ideas, but sustained legal work.

The Pro Bono Initiative was created in collaboration with our founding pro bono partner, Wilson Sonsini Goodrich & Rosati, one of the nation's leading firms.

The Pro Bono Initiative brings together law firms, academics, and volunteer attorneys to provide pro bono services to support Great Salt Lake restoration. In partnership with the Great Salt Lake Project, participating attorneys contribute their skills to support research, policy development, and on-the-ground implementation—all at no cost to the public or to state and local governments. We are lawyers for the lake and encourage additional firms to join the effort.

How It Works

Through the Pro Bono Initiative, pro bono attorneys work in collaboration with Great Salt Lake Project faculty to tackle real-world legal needs related to saving the lake. Pro bono volunteers may assist with:

  • Drafting model ordinances or legislation
  • Develop lake rescue policy
  • Researching legal authorities under federal or state law
  • Supporting local governments with water policy questions
  • Advising on federal funding opportunities
  • Assisting with water leasing, water banking, or trust agreements
  • Contributing to legal briefs, memos, or white papers
  • Providing strategic input on regulatory and administrative pathways
