Deborah Dugan (’84) selected as new president and CEO of the Recording Academy
Deborah Dugan is (RED)’s CEO, the AIDS organization founded by Bono and Bobby Shriver to engage the world’s most iconic brands in the AIDS fight. (RED) partners include Apple, Beats by Dre, The Coca-Cola Company, Starbucks, Bank of America, Salesforce and Latin America’s Claro and Telcel among many others. Since its inception in 2006, (RED) has raised over $500 million for the Global Fund and impacted the lives of 110 million people. Prior to (RED), Deborah was President of Disney Publishing Worldwide, a $2 billion retail division of the Walt Disney Company. Deborah also served as Senior Advisor to the Tribeca Enterprises Board and is Co-Chair of The Moth, an award-winning storytelling organization. Previously, she spent eight years as Executive Vice President at EMI/Capitol Records and began her career as a mergers and acquisition attorney on Wall Street.

Kirk Davies (’89) named clerk of court for the United States District Court in Tennessee
Davies most recently led the Defense Institute of International Legal Studies, which serves as the Department of Defense’s primary source for international legal education, training and rule of law programs. He oversaw a staff of 40 and managed a $9 million budget at the Institute’s Newport, Rhode Island, location. During his tenure, Mr. Davies developed and implemented an updated curriculum model, streamlined the finance structure and managed a hiring surge that increased civilian staff by 50 percent. Entering the U.S. Air Force as a judge advocate almost 30 years ago, Davies has served in a number of roles at air bases at home and abroad.

Governor Appoints Brian Steed (’02) as Executive Director of the Utah Department of Natural Resources
Before joining the BLM in October 2017, Steed served as Chief of Staff for Representative Chris Stewart of Utah. Before that, he taught economics at Utah State University and was once a deputy county attorney in Iron County, Utah. He is a native of Logan, Utah, and attended Utah State University, earning both a B.A. and M.A. in political science. He also earned his law degree at the University of Utah, with a Certificate in Natural Resources and Environmental Law. Steed then earned his doctorate in Public Policy from Indiana University in 2010.

Engels Tejeda (’06) to be 2019 commencement speaker at Westminster College
Engels is a trial lawyer focusing on consumer claims defense, cybersecurity and privacy litigation, banking litigation, and creditors’ rights in bankruptcy. He appears regularly in federal and state courts representing businesses and individuals in diverse matters, including data breach class actions, finance disputes, claims under the Uniform Commercial Code and state foreclosure statutes, and actions under the Bankruptcy Code and the Americans with Disabilities Act.

Jing Liu (’08) joins Sheppard Mullin IP team in Del Mar, CA
Liu has extensive experience in management of patents and other intellectual property assets, patent validity and noninfringement opinions, IP due diligence, competitive IP landscape analyses, licensing and other transactions. She practices in a wide range of complex technological areas, from biotechnology (including oncology, gene therapy, industrial biotechnology, diagnostics, genomics, bioinformatics, microbiome-related technologies) and pharmaceuticals to chemicals and nanotechnology. Liu received her B.S. in Biology from Wuhan University in China; her Ph.D. in Biology from the University of Kansas Medical Center; and her J.D. from the University of Utah – S.J. Quinney College of Law.

John Lore (’08) guides Capital Law Fund through Qualified Opportunity Zone (QOZ) changes
An Opportunity Zone is an economically-distressed community where new investments, under certain conditions, may be eligible for preferential tax treatment. Lore advises emerging fund managers throughout the United States, Europe, and the Middle-East in forming and operating real estate funds, hedge funds, private equity funds, and other alternative funds using varied strategies; including equity, fixed income, distressed debt, sector funds. He also advises real estate funds during pre-launch stage, during the soft-commitment pre-capital raising stage.
