The “We The People” program is to help our students develop a deeper understanding of the Constitution and the foundation of the Government.  The students study the Constitution, write a paper, and then give a speech on the Constitution in which they perform in front of a platform of Judges.   We are requesting law student volunteers to not only come in & help in the weeks leading up to the Competition day, but also to be judges on our panel.

This opportunity involves co-coaching one high school mock trial team (11 students) with one practice a week after school (flexible around coach's schedule) and at competitions. 

The team will compete at least twice with playoffs being held between Feb 18th to Mar. 1st, 2014. 

Quarter finals will continue on from Mar. 14th - 19th, semi's on Mar. 21st and so forth to the state finals on Thursday Mar. 27th. 

This is our first competitive mock trial team and are in need of guidance.

The Utah State Bar Access to Justice Department runs the statewide Pro Bono Program and the Modest Means Program.  Both programs help members of the public find the resources that they need to navigate through the judicial system.  The volunteer would assist in many different aspects of this process including:  answering phone calls to assist members of the public regarding pro bono issues, processing Modest Means Lawyer Referral Requests, helping plan CLE presentations sponsored by the Access to Justice Department, filing paperwork, contacting attorneys to request they take a case or assist with a certain project & additional tasks as they arise.

Law students are needed to assist in reviewing scholarly articles for publication on criminal law related issues.  The Utah Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers and the Criminal Law Section of the Utah State Bar have teamed together to create the Utah Journal of Criminal Law. 

The Editorial Board seeks law student volunteers who are interested in reviewing 1 article per year.  Duties include checking citations and proofreading for typos and accurrate content. 

This is a great opportunity to get to know the author, as well a judge, a defense attorney, and a prosecutor who will be assigned to also edit each article. 

Editing duties will provide students a learning experience and an opportunity to get to know practicing lawyers and judges.

CASA Volunteers are appointed by the Guardian ad Litem attorney to advocate for the best interests of abused and neglected children. The p rimary responsibilities of a CASA are to: Gather information: Review documents and records, interview the children, family members and professionals in their lives. Document Findings: Provide written reports to the GAL attorney in preparation for all court proceedings. Appear in/Attend Court: Advocate for the child's best interests and provide testimony when necessary. Recommend Services: Ensure that the children are receiving appropriate services by keeping the GAL informed of any needs currently not being addressed. Bring concerns about the child’s health, education, mental health, etc. to the GALs immediate attention. Monitor Case Plans and Court Orders: Assist the Guardian by reporting any deviation from what the court has ordered for the life of the case. Keep the Guardian ad Litem Informed: Update the GAL on developments with all participating agencies and family members. Visit with the Child: Maintain a consistent and regular visiting schedule with the child. Help the child understand the court proceedings.

The Utah Autism Coalition and Autism Speaks is looking for law students to do policy research and other projects related to 2013-2014 proposed legislation to reform Utah insurance to mandate coverage of medical treatment for children with Autism.

This is a great opportunity for those interested in policy and the legislative process as you will receive invitations to attend many face-to-face meetings with Utah lawmakers and participate in a large-scale grassroots movement in the state of Utah.

Our VP of Policy Research could use 2-3 volunteer law students to assist with policy research on both the bill and also provider licensure requirements in Utah and other states.

Our VP of Grassroots Directives could use 2-3 volunteer law students to assist with converting legal information into training materials for our core group of 100 grassroots advocates that will rotate daily on Capitol Hill throughout the legislative session.

We also need 1-2 volunteer law students?to assist with volunteer coordination on capitol hill during the legislative session.
