Now beginning our third year, the Center for Law and Biomedical Sciences has firmly assumed the role of a fulcrum at the University of Utah for the discussion of issues in law and biotechnology, law and bioethics, and health law and policy. We have sponsored highly successful symposia; supported our students in moot court competitions; contributed to the University’s role as an incubator of scientific discovery; continued our pro bono work at the legal-medical clinic; added a pro bono guardianship project; published a lively blog and white papers; and supported the ongoing scholarship of both our faculty and our students. Our team has grown, too: this year we have four full-time faculty members, one part-time faculty member, and nine student fellows. New steps this year include our spring semester colloquium on current issues in health law and our offering of a health law course for non-lawyers to an interdisciplinary group of students in medicine, nursing, pharmacy, and other health sciences.
