On September 22, 2012, The Salt Lake Tribune published an op-ed by University of Utah S.J. Quinney College of Law Professor Robert Adler.
Titled “Who’s guarding the pollution henhouse?” the op-ed was inspired by recent news reports indicating that the Utah Division of Radiation Control has failed to adequately monitor the state’s radioactive waste industry, which has instead remained largely self-regulated.
Adler suggests that a middle ground involving both industry self-monitoring and government inspections and monitoring offers a better approach than either strict industry self-monitoring or government inspection “of every release and activity that might cause pollution[.]”
