Quinney College Team Wins Regional Mediation Competition, Advances to Nationals

The team of Kelly Fowler and Jeff Fullmer from the S.J. Quinney College of Law took first place at the regional Representation in Mediation competition March 6-7 at the University of Oklahoma in Norman, Oklahoma. In placing first, Fowler and Fullmer bested 10 teams from Region 9, consisting of Oklahoma, Arkansas, Texas, Missouri and Utah. It represented the first time in the College’s history that a team won the Regional competition and advanced to the National round.

Team coach Jay Wilgus, himself a graduate of the College of Law and former competitor, explains that the participants prepared for the competition by analyzing each problem in terms of the legal issues involved, the interests of each party, and the issues to be addressed. “From there, the team developed a negotiating strategy and allocated their roles between lawyer and conflict to most effectively achieve their interests,” he relates.

In addition to the team of Fowler and Fullmer, the Quinney College was also ably represented by the team of Linh Tran and Stephanie Wilson, according to Wilgus: “Both teams exhibited a great work ethic, attitude, and technical skill. They worked diligently to prepare for each round of competition. I could not have been more proud of Kelly, Jeff, Linh, and Stephanie for representing the S.J. Quinney College of Law so superbly in Norman and look forward to Kelly and Jeff’s continued success.”

The National competition will be held in New York City in mid-April.
