Professor Linda Smith and Barry Stratford (’12) co-authored an article titled “DIY in Family Law: A Case Study of a Brief Advice Clinic for Pro Se Litigants,” in the most recent issue of the Journal of Law and Family Studies.
Based on a case study of a brief legal advice clinic in Salt Lake City, the article asks a series of questions, including who are the individuals using these clinics, and how well does the clinic meet the need of its clients? According to the abstract, the study on which the article is based “highlights honorable efforts by volunteer law students and expert family lawyers, but identifies gaps and weaknesses in the public’s access to justice.”
