On March 7th, several members of the University of Utah S.J. Quinney College of Law’s Minority Law Caucus (MLC), including Shenhoor Grewal, Vivianne Mbaku, Karla Munoz, and Mirela Omeragic, conducted a presentation on the value of a legal education to college-bound minority students at Salt Lake City’s West High School. The presentation was designed to give high school students a glimpse of what it takes to get into law school and how a legal career can impact their community. Some students had never thought of becoming lawyers and others already knew what field of law they wanted to work in.
The students involved are a part of West High’s AVID program, which provides academic assistance to students in the middle of the academic field with the goal of to improving their grades, challenging them academically, and increasing college enrollment.
Students were provided with career options and a thorough outline of the application process. After the presentation, students and MLC representatives discussed the law school experience. The presentation ended with several teachers requesting that MLC return and speak to their classes. Because of the enthusiastic reception, MLC plans to implement an ongoing community outreach program at West High.
