June 16, 2014 —3rd District Judge Andrew Stone this week ordered Utah Attorney General Sean Reyes to appear in court on June 16 to explain the state of Utah’s refusal to recognize a same-sex adoption.
Clifford Rosky, Professor of Law at the University of Utah S.J. Quinney College of Law and the chairman of Equality Utah, was interviewed by The Salt Lake Tribune, Deseret News and KUTV about the matter.
“The Utah attorney general doesn’t get to declare what the law is; only the courts of Utah can declare Utah law,” Rosky told The Tribune. “Nevermind the personal toll this takes — what could be more devastating to a family than looking at a child and her mother and saying, ‘You’re not really a parent; that’s not really your parent.’ When the law has already said yes, she is.”
