As the regulatory environment in the over-the-counter (OTC) derivatives market has heated up, Christian Johnson, Professor of Law at the University of Utah S.J. Quinney College of Law, has made frequent presentations on the issues involved in clearing OTC derivatives. On May 20t, Johnson presented “Preparing to Clear OTC Derivatives: Potential & Realities” to over 120 staff members at the National Futures Association in Chicago. On the following day, he presented “Clearing OTC Derivatives: Understanding the Business, Mechanics and Legal Issues,” to over 90 staff members at the Commodity Futures Trading Commission. The issues have become particularly topical as the mandatory June 10 clearing deadline for certain interest rate swaps and Credit Default Swap products approaches.
