IMF General Counsel to Speak at College of Law Graduation, May 13

Sean Hagan, General Counsel and Director of the Legal Department at the International Monetary Fund, will speak at the University of Utah S.J. Quinney College of Law’s 2011 Commencement Ceremony on May 13.

“I have known Sean Hagan for 15 years, and he is an extraordinary international lawyer, said Dean Hiram Chodosh. “He is exquisitely well educated, fluent in Japanese, French, and Spanish, and in full command of both the complex technical detail and the larger policy considerations of every issue he handles. We so look forward to his reflections on the personal side of an outstanding professional career, as he is an inspiring exemplar for our graduates.”

Hagan advises the Fund’s management, Executive Board and membership on all legal aspects of the Fund’s operations, including its regulatory, advisory and lending functions. He has published extensively on both the law of the Fund and a broad range of legal issues relating to the prevention and resolution of financial crisis, with a particular emphasis on insolvency and the restructuring of debt, including sovereign debt.

Prior to beginning work at the IMF, Hagan was in private practice. He received his J.D. from the Georgetown University Law Center and an M.S. in International Political Economy from the London School of Economics and Political Science.

The College of Law commencement ceremony will take place from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at Kingsbury Hall, 1395 E. Presidents Circle. The ceremony will be followed by a reception for graduates and guests at the President’s Circle, directly south of Kingsbury Hall. For more information, visit the College’s graduation website.
