On Monday, February 25, 2013, the Center for Global Justice hosted Judge Kholoud al-Faqih and filmmaker Erika Cohn for a discussion of Judge Kholoud’s appointment as the first female judge on a Shari’a court in the Middle East and a screening of the trailer for the documentary Three Judges. Moderated by Professor Erika George and through the translation of Professor Chibli Mallat, Judge Kholoud described her groundbreaking journey from her entry into the legal field, to her appointment to the bench, to her current discrimination suit pending before the Palestinian High Court of Justice. Judge Kholoud is a subject of filmmaker Erika Cohn’s documentary entitled Three Judges which examines the lives and careers of three female judges in the Palestinian Shari’a courts. Faculty and students of the College of Law were joined by members of the Women Lawyers of Utah, faculty from the Department of Languages and Literature, and welcome guests from the community. This is the first of what the College of Law hopes will be many in a series of events examining the concept of global justice through the lens of gender and human rights.
