On May 26, at the Grand America Hotel, the Utah State Bar, Women Lawyers of Utah, the University of Utah S. J. Quinney College of Law, and the BYU J. Reuben Clark Law School honored the First One Hundred Women Lawyers admitted to practice in Utah. Some 350 people attended the event, including many of the honorees and their families and guests, as well as the Project Sponsors, Utah State Bar Commissioners, and members of the legal community.
“It was my pleasure to participate in the evolution and completion of this Project,” said Cathleen Gilbert, the chair of the Women Lawyers of Utah Special Projects Committee. “We were the lucky ones who were able to get to know all of the First 100 either in person or by compiling their updated bios and advice.” Members of the committee filmed interviews with certain of the honorees, ultimately featuring 13 whom they felt were representative of all of the First 100 Women. (Gilbert explained that time and financial constraints precluded filming interviews with each of the 100.) The Film can be viewed at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b3g-73GUu8c
“I hope that the film conveys the courage and tenacity exemplified by the Utah women trailblazers in the law who paved the way for those who follow and practice law in Utah today,” Gilbert said. “Participating in this Special Projects has underscored the privileges and progress we enjoy today due to their efforts, and motivates one to exhibit similar courage and tenacity in facing today’s different challenges.”
