James Duffin earned a bachelor’s degree in religious studies from Utah State University, initially intending to become a religious educator. However, his interests shifted toward a career in law.
“Understanding how religion and law intersects fascinated me, and it made me realize how law is the foundation for practically everything,” he says.
While working as a paralegal, Duffin learned about the Master of Legal Studies (MLS) program and became motivated to pursue further education.
“I wanted to broaden my skill set and make a greater contribution to the legal field, particularly in motion practice, trial, and appellate work,” Duffin explains.
Earning his MLS degree also provided Duffin with valuable insights into many other aspects of life.
“If you’re looking for a job, you will gain an understanding of employment law as it relates to the workforce. If you plan to start a business, you’ll learn about business law. You’ll explore contracts, which is crucial across all industries. If you’re purchasing a home, you’ll have a clearer grasp on real property law. The program also delves into the roles of federal and state government agencies. And, of course, it will sharpen and refine your skills in legal writing, analysis, interpretation, advocacy, and problem-solving,” he says. “My advice to anyone on the fence: Just go for it. The MLS program equips you with practical knowledge that you will inevitably need anyway, regardless of your chosen profession or life track.”
Duffin also suggests that prospective MLS students gain some legal experience before starting the program.
“This doesn’t have to be at a law firm—it could be any position that involves applying some level of legal concepts,” he advises. “That experience helps you retain what you’ll learn and increase your ability to see the bigger picture. It also adds context to your coursework and enhances your understanding of why your law professors are teaching specific material.”
Although Duffin already had legal experience, he worked closely with MLS Career Coach Dominic Militello to help shape his career path.
“Dominic helped me refocus and restructure my approach, and he reassured me that I was on the right track. The turning point was realizing I had something of value to offer,” he says.
After earning his MLS degree in August 2024, Duffin was hired as a paralegal and now handles a wide range of responsibilities across multiple types of cases.
“Currently, I work at Dexter Law, which specializes in personal injury, bankruptcy, business law, criminal law, family law, estate planning, and other civil matters,” he explains. “I believe my MLS degree has carried weight in the hiring process, and I look forward to expanding my knowledge in other areas of law.”
Looking ahead, Duffin is planning to pursue further legal education.
“My future goals include becoming a licensed paralegal practitioner (LPP) through the Utah State Bar and writing more about the intersection of religion and law,” he says.
