Jennifer Erickson, a middle-aged white woman with shoulder-length brown hair wearing a black business suitJennifer Erickson has spent her career in the financial industry, working in regulatory compliance and operational risk for banks such as Goldman Sachs and American Express National Bank. Currently, she is the director of operational risk management for Zions Bancorporation, where she has worked for the past nine years.

“In my role, I help manage the bank’s losses that result from breakdowns in people, process, and systems or from external events (acts of God). In my capacity, I oversee multiple teams that collaborate with bank employees to identify and assess their risks, and to develop and implement effective controls to mitigate those risks,” Erickson says.

She’s also enrolled in the online Master of Legal Studies (MLS) program at the S.J. Quinney College of Law, gaining a better understanding of the law and how it applies to her work without having to become a practicing attorney. Erickson says she is excited to earn a master’s degree in only one year.

The online format offers flexibility to do the coursework, and she enjoys connecting with her fellow classmates.

“While the program is online, there have still been a lot of opportunities to connect with my classmates and expand my professional network. The program is also very flexible, which allows me to choose the best time to do my homework. For example, I have a very long commute and will sometimes listen to the class lectures during that time,” she says.

And though the coursework is challenging, Erickson appreciates her support system, which helps her through the program.

“There is a lot of coursework that needs to be done each week. It takes a lot of planning, prioritization, and discipline to stay on task,” she says. “Balancing my homework with my professional and personal life can also be a challenge. It helps to have a strong support system in place during this time.”

Utah Law’s ranking and reputation for excellent academics and faculty members are among the many things Erickson likes about the College of Law. Most of all, she likes the collaborative opportunities available.

“There are numerous opportunities for students to engage with the community through clinics, pro bono work, and public service projects,” she says.

Erickson completes the MLS program at the end of summer semester 2025. She looks forward to applying her legal education in the complex regulatory environments at her job.

“This enhanced legal knowledge will position me for more senior leadership opportunities and allow me to contribute more strategically to my organization’s goals,” she says.
