This past semester, students in the Environmental Policy Accelerator Clinic made significant contributions to advancing policy solutions for restoring Great Salt Lake. The Clinic produced two Great Salt Lake Legislative Updates that provided analysis of state legislation affecting the lake. The February 18, 2025 update examined key bills introduced during the legislative session and highlighted the five most impactful measures for the lake. The March 5, 2025 update provided an overview of the session’s outcomes relating to the lake, and identified three critical remaining legislative priorities for the future. Additionally, two students published opinion pieces as part of their clinic work: Kyle Lowe co-authored an article in Deseret News titled, “Saving our children’s lake” with Prof. Brig Daniels and Prof. Beth Parker. Kyle also co-authored an article with Prof. Brig Daniels in the Provo Daily Herald titled, “Provo should change its water rates instead of taking an unfair payday loan.” Beyond their written advocacy, students engaged directly with policymakers and stakeholders through meetings with legislators at the Utah State Capitol and a field visit to Great Salt Lake. Students also continued to work on the Lake Leaders Initiative to assist local leaders conserve water for Great Salt Lake. Students’ hard work this semester contributed to the Clinic’s mission to provide actionable, law-based policy recommendations for the lake.
