Nicolás Parra-Herrera, Utah Law’s inaugural Wagner/Holbrook Chair in Negotiation and associate professor of law, has received the 2025-2026 New Voices in Dispute Resolution Award from the Association of American Law Schools’ Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) Section as part of its New Voices in Dispute Resolution program.
The award is given to two ADR scholars nationwide each year, pairing a “new voice” with a distinguished mentor. The program involves a year-long mentorship on a paper or project, culminating with the new scholar presenting their research at the mentor’s institution in an event open to the dispute resolution community and the public. Andrea Schneider, professor of law and director of the Kukin Program for Conflict Resolution at the Cardozo School of Law, was recognized as Parra-Herrera’s mentor for the program.
In tandem with the New Voices in Dispute Resolution Award, Parra-Herrera has also received the Stephen G. Goldberg ADR Scholar Award, funded by the Negotiation and Team Resources Institute, which covers travel and other expenses associated with his presentation.
Parra-Herrera’s scholarship focuses on the underlying philosophical, political, historical and economic ideas that have shaped how ADR methods are understood, used and taught. He is currently developing a paper titled “Getting to Getting to Yes: From the Emergence of Interest-Based Negotiation Theory to Negotiation as Self-Crafting.”
“I am thrilled that my work on the intellectual history and theory of negotiation is gaining national recognition in a competitive program led by the AALS ADR Section,” said Parra-Herrera. “I am honored to be recognized by the ADR Section as the 2025-2026 New Voice in Dispute Resolution Scholar. This will highlight the work and research we are conducting at S.J. Quinney College of Law in the field of negotiation.”
