Utah Law alumna Melissa Holyoak confirmed as Federal Trade Commission commissioner

Melissa Holyoak, a white woman with blond hair wearing a charcoal-colored suit jacketUtah alumna Melissa Holyoak (JD ’03) has been confirmed to serve as a Federal Trade Commission (FTC) commissioner, along with Andrew Ferguson, who most recently served as solicitor general of the Commonwealth of Virginia. Commissioner Rebecca Slaughter was also confirmed to a second term.

“Congratulations to Andrew Ferguson and Melissa Holyoak on their confirmations, and to Commissioner Slaughter on her re-confirmation,” FTC Chair Lina M. Khan said in a statement. “I look forward to welcoming Andrew and Melissa to the FTC as we work to vigorously protect Americans from unfair methods of competition and unfair and deceptive business practices.”

Holyoak was nominated by President Biden in July 2023 to serve as an FTC commissioner, and her term will end Sept. 25, 2025. She most recently served as solicitor general with the Utah attorney general’s office and previously as president and general counsel of Hamilton Lincoln Law Institute, a Washington, D.C.-based public interest law firm. Holyoak also worked as a public interest attorney with the Competitive Enterprise Institute and the Center for Class Action Fairness.

“I am excited to congratulate alumna Melissa Holyoak on her Federal Trade Commission confirmation,” said Elizabeth Kronk Warner, dean of the S.J. Quinney College of Law. “Melissa will also be joining two other women commissioners at the FTC, continuing to promote female leadership within law.”
