Intellectual Property Clinic (IP Clinic) is a USPTO designated patent and trademark clinic. This pro bono clinic helps entrepreneurs, nonprofit organizations, small business, students, and others with intellectual property issues, including filing trademark and patent applications. Students learn substantive intellectual property, along with skills to effectively prepare and file patent and trademark applications.

Criteria for Selecting Clinic Clients
The IP Clinic selects applicants who meet all four of the following criteria:

  1. The applicant would otherwise be unlikely to obtain qualified legal advice;
  2. The applicant has not received a significant round of outside funding or financing from investors;
  3. The applicant’s place of business is within Utah; and
  4. The work requested by the applicant is appropriate for students and presents an interesting educational opportunity.

Clients who do not satisfy each of these standards are selected only under exceptional circumstances. All client selection decisions are subject to the IP Clinic staffing availability and are made solely with the clinic director’s approval.
