A Wallace Stegner Center event

EVENT DETAILS:

Please join the Stegner Center for a screening of the award-winning film The Lake which addresses the existential threats facing the Great Salt Lake, followed by a panel discussion with Great Salt Lake leaders and scientists featured in the film.

In place of previews before the film, we will be joined for a short presentation by special guest Chris Carlson, author of a photography book about the lake called Preserving Greatness and the creative director of GSL Luxury, who will give us glimpse into his work as a photographer and the Great Salt Lake fashion designs his photographs inspired.

Film description
The Lake follows three Utahns fighting to save Great Salt Lake. The film offers a close look at the sustained, often behind-the-scenes work required to respond to the lake’s decline. Set against the lake’s extraordinary landscape, the film explores what Great Salt Lake means to Utah and what is at stake for the region’s air quality, wildlife, economy, and communities. The consequences of the lake’s decline linger at the edges: increasing dust and an ecosystem under increasing strain—a reminder of what could be lost and why the work to protect Great Salt Lake matters.

Panelists
Following the screening, Great Salt Lake Commissioner Hannah Freeze, BYU ecologist Dr. Ben Abbott, Westminster University Great Salt Lake Institute Director Bonnie Baxter, and University of Utah atmospheric scientist Dr. Kevin Perry will discuss the film and the opportunities ahead for Great Salt Lake.
