Many firms, both local and out of state, seek to hire 1L’s who have shown a commitment to diversity issues as part of “diversity clerkship/fellowship” programs. This can be a great way to get firm experience during your first summer—something that can be hard to get! If you have shown a commitment to diversity, and are interested in working at a law firm this summer, consider applying for a diversity fellowship! Many large law firms sponsor this fellowships for 1L’s. Click on this link to view some of the fellowships for 1L’s that PDO has found—keep in mind that those highlighted in yellow have not yet posted current information for summer 2011—you will want to regularly check those firms’ websites for more information.
Additionally, at least a few local firms, Strong & Hanni, Richards Brandt Miller & Nelson, and the Salt Lake City office of Snell & Wilmer routinely sponsor diversity law clerks either over the summer or during your 2L year. Watch your emails from PDO for more information, since we will update you as we receive information. Note that as of now, it seems that Stoel Rives’ Salt Lake City office is not participating in a diversity fellowship program—but their Portland and Seattle offices are!
