Law students are needed to assist in reviewing scholarly articles for publication on criminal law related issues.  The Utah Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers and the Criminal Law Section of the Utah State Bar have teamed together to create the Utah Journal of Criminal Law. 

The Editorial Board seeks law student volunteers who are interested in reviewing 1 article per year.  Duties include checking citations and proofreading for typos and accurrate content. 

This is a great opportunity to get to know the author, as well a judge, a defense attorney, and a prosecutor who will be assigned to also edit each article. 

Editing duties will provide students a learning experience and an opportunity to get to know practicing lawyers and judges.

The NAAN/PBI Mentor Program pairs foreign legal, judicial, or justice system professionals (“Participants”) in the NAAN program with current law students to enhance access to information and issues within the U.S. and Utah justice systems.

The Court will recruit and train volunteers to help judges make better decisions in guardianship matters, make sure vulnerable adults under guardianships are protected, and help guardians better perform their duties.

CASA Volunteers are appointed by the Guardian ad Litem attorney to advocate for the best interests of abused and neglected children. The p rimary responsibilities of a CASA are to: Gather information: Review documents and records, interview the children, family members and professionals in their lives. Document Findings: Provide written reports to the GAL attorney in preparation for all court proceedings. Appear in/Attend Court: Advocate for the child's best interests and provide testimony when necessary. Recommend Services: Ensure that the children are receiving appropriate services by keeping the GAL informed of any needs currently not being addressed. Bring concerns about the child’s health, education, mental health, etc. to the GALs immediate attention. Monitor Case Plans and Court Orders: Assist the Guardian by reporting any deviation from what the court has ordered for the life of the case. Keep the Guardian ad Litem Informed: Update the GAL on developments with all participating agencies and family members. Visit with the Child: Maintain a consistent and regular visiting schedule with the child. Help the child understand the court proceedings.

The Utah Autism Coalition and Autism Speaks is looking for law students to do policy research and other projects related to 2013 proposed legislation to reform Utah insurance to mandate coverage of medical treatment for children with Autism.

This is a great opportunity for those interested in policy and the legislative process as you will receive invitations to attend many face-to-face meetings with Utah lawmakers and participate in a large-scale grassroots movement in the state of Utah.

Our VP of Policy Research could use 2-3?volunteer law students?to assist with policy research on both the bill and also provider licensure requirements in Utah and other states.

Our VP of Grassroots Directives could use 2-3?volunteer law students?to assist with converting legal information into training materials for our core group of 100 grassroots advocates that will rotate daily on Capitol Hill throughout the legislative session.

We also need 1-2?volunteer law students?to assist with volunteer coordination on capitol hill during the legislative session.

The Rocky Mountain Innocence Center (RMIC) works to correct and prevent the conviction of innocent people in Utah, Nevada, and Wyoming. RMIC has unique volunteer opportunities for law students in 3 basic categories: Students to assist with Spanish-speaking prisoners (both correspondence and in-person investigative interviews at the prison and in the community).

Legal Aid Society of Salt Lake City maintains a pro se clinic in Room W-15 (Matheson Courthouse) to assist pro se individuals who are representing themselves in family law matters such as divorce or custody issues. Clinic staff does not give any legal advice, but will provide information about the legal process & provide legal forms.

Teach American civics and basic English at a weekly citizenship class to refugees and immigrants preparing for the USCIS naturalization exam. Complete outreach projects to inform potential attendees of the citizenship class.

Students assist attorneys represent clients with small claims, collections, employment, discrimination, and consumer matters. Students may be required to do additional follow-up with clients. Giving free legal advice to the homeless at the St. Vincent center. The attorney also takes on some cases for low or no fee. Extra research may be required, but can be conducted at school or home.

The Utah Refugee and Immigration Center is with helping several Sudanese refugee families to become U.S. citizens. Many of these families have limited English knowledge based on their lack of education and post-traumatic stress disorders, and are in need of medical waivers in order to go forward with their naturalization process. 

The law student will help assist the attorney supervisor with the applications for naturalization, as well as the medical waivers. The law student should have interest in immigration, international law or public benefits.
