Leonard Black
Following his graduation from the University of Utah with an MBA degree, Leonard joined the Air Force and received an officer’s commission. He served in the Air Force for ten years during which he was involved in contract services on major support contracts, had a tour in Vietnam, was an Associate Professor at the Air Force Academy and spent several years involved in the development and deployment of covert satellite systems.
Leonard left the Air Force to pursue personal business interest. Over the next twenty years he worked for major corporations, small companies and for himself. During this time Leonard co-found and managed several successful small business ventures.
Having always had a love and desire for teaching, Leonard has been an adjunct professor for several colleges and universities. He is now on staff at the University of Utah, directing the various initiatives of the Entrepreneur Center, Utec, for the David Eccles School of Business. In this capacity he has assisted in the development of the entrepreneur curriculum, works with the Utah Entrepreneur Challenge student group (a business plan competition), oversees the Utah Venture Fund, directs the Opportunity Quest, helps the students in the Lassonde New Venture Development Center and coordinates the UTec Speaker Series. Leonard also networks with local entrepreneur support groups in the community, other schools at the University of Utah and with other colleges and universities in the State of Utah. He is also teaching in the under graduate and MBA programs – his real love.
Leonard is the University’s Sam Walton Fellow and as such is the faculty advisor to the SIFE team (Students in Free Enterprise), an international collegiate organization specializing in the fostering of Entrepreneurism and the development of business leaders. SIFE team members get their learning and growth opportunities through a variety of out reach projects. The Utah SIFE team won the regional championships and became the National Rookie Team of the Year in their first year of competition.
