Awards:

Awards are given in recognition of a specific achievement (papers, GPAs, grades or outstanding work) and may or may not include a cash component.

Fellowships are awarded to recognize demonstrated interest and/or achievement in a specific area of law.  Fellowships include a service or work component for which the student receives a stipend and may include a tuition benefit. Students will be notified when applications are due.

Scholarships:

Scholarships fall into two categories-merit based and need-based awards.  Merit based scholarships are awarded to students in recognition of academic excellence or demonstrated interest and/or achievement in a specific area of law.  They do not include a service or work component, but may include a tuition benefit. As a general rule, merit based scholarships will not be awarded to students already receiving merit-based scholarships for the same semester. Students will be notified when applications are due. 

Need-based scholarships are awarded to help supplement the cost of attending school.  Students are selected based on demonstrated financial need.  This need is determined by analysis that uses information from the student's completed Free Application for Federal Student Aid.

Academic Awards  At the end of each academic year, the students in each class with the top GPA's will be provided with the following awards: Dean's Award (awarded to the student with the highest GPA in the class), Faculty Award (awarded to the student with the second highest GPA in the class) and College Award (awarded to the third highest GPA in the class).  In case of ties, students with the same GPA will receive the same award.

American Bankruptcy Institute Award   The ABI awards a certificate and a medal to the student who achieves a high level of academic performance in a bankruptcy-related course or clinic and is recommended by his or her instructor or supervisor. Eligibility for the award requires participation in any course, seminar, or internship program in which bankruptcy is a major focus including rehabilitating bankruptcy, creditor-debtor relations, advanced commercial law, or a United States bankruptcy court judicial internship. The faculty chooses the recipient.

Reva Beck Bosone Scholarship  The Women's Law Caucus sponsors this scholarship, an annual cash award given to a first- or second-year student who is a member of the Women's Law Caucus and who is in good academic standing. A WLC selection committee considers the candidate's contributions and potential to make a significant contribution in a field of importance to women. The WLC announces when applications will be accepted, currently early fall semester.


CALI  The purpose of the CALI award is to recognize academic excellence in legal education.  CALI recognizes students who receive the highest grade in a course.  There are no restrictions on the number of courses or the number of students within a course.  The only restriction is that all courses be law-related and taught within the law school.


J. Reuben Clark Society Internship Program  A $3,000 stipend will be awarded to a student whose academic work is distinguished but who has been unable to obtain summer legal employment following the first- or second-year of law school. The recipient will be expected to spend at least half of the summer providing pro bono legal services to a selected Utah charity. (more information)

 

Dewsnup Fellowship  This fellowship is awarded to a first-year student who has demonstrated an interest in natural resources law and excellence in academics. It provides a $5,500 scholarship for the second year of law school, a tuition benefit, and a summer clerkship with the Utah Attorney General's Office working in the area of natural resources. Edwin Brown Firmage Student Award in International Law and Human Rights  This $250 award honors a student who has demonstrated strong academic achievement and an ongoing commitment to international law and human rights issues through coursework, extracurricular activities, volunteer participation, and/or previous experience. The award is open to current second- or third-year students.  (more information)

 

Fordham Loan Forgiveness Program  To assist and encourage students to pursue careers in public interest law, this loan repayment assistance program helps graduates who are employed in the public sector repay educational loans. The designation of recipients depends upon the availability of funds. Applications are accepted two times per year, March 31 and September 30. (more information)

 

Lionel Frankel Public Interest Summer Fellowship  The college of law and the Public Interest Law Organization award summer stipends ranging from $1,000 to $2,000 for students doing public interest legal work during the summer. (more information)

 

Reza Ali Khazeni Memorial Fellowship in Environmental Law  This fellowship provides a $4,000 summer stipend to support a student's summer work in a low- or non-paying not-for-profit environmental agency or organization. Applicants must have completed the first year of law school. See Robert Keiter for additional information. (more information)


John Farr and Ann Clayton Larson Scholarship  This scholarship honors a first- or second-year student who demonstrates academic achievement and an ongoing commitment to family and juvenile law issues through course work, extracurricular activities, volunteer participation, and/or previous experience. Leadership Scholarships  Up to 10 second- and third-year students will be awarded a $2,750 cash award and a partial tuition waiver based on leadership success. Curricular, co-curricular, volunteer, professional and other involvement may be considered. (more information)

 

William H. Leary Scholars  Leary scholars are students whose grades place them in the top 20 percent of their class. For first-year students, the Leary selection is made following the completion of first-year courses. For second- and third-year students, designations are made following each semester and are based solely on that semester's grades. To be eligible for a given semester, a student must complete no fewer than 12 credit hours, 10 of which must be graded.

 

David T. Lewis Clinical Award  Awards are given each year to graduating seniors who have outstanding achievement in the Clinical Program. The clinical director, with the advice of a committee chosen by her, makes the awards. Nominations may come from faculty, clinical supervisors, or students may nominate themselves. A cash award of approximately $100 is presented to each recipient. The deadline for nominations is generally the end of spring semester. (more information)

 

Steven Magleby Memorial Law Student Fellowship   This fellowship presents a monetary stipend and award to an outstanding student who demonstrates a devotion to furthering the rights of people with disabilities. (more information)

 

Judge Gilbert A. Martinez Semper Fi Community Service Scholarship    This scholarship will recognize a student who has an interest in and commitment to community service-inparticular service to communities of color and/or low income communities.(more information)


Minority Law Caucus Scholarships  The Minority Law Caucus scholarships are awarded to MLC members in good academic standing. The MLC selection committee considers a variety of factors, which may include contributions to the community and financial need. Scholarships are generally awarded in the late spring.

 

National Association of Women Lawyers Award  The NAWL awards a one-year honorary membership and a year's subscription to the NAWL Law Journal to an outstanding law graduate who has demonstrated academic achievement, motivation, tenacity, and drive; who exhibits promise for future contributions to the advancement of women in society; and presents a personable and professional image. The Dean's Office chooses the recipient.

 

O'Hara Honors Program in Natural Resources Law  The O'Hara Honors Program provides a law school $5,500 merit scholarship for the recipient's third year of law school. Depending on available funding in the state Attorney General's Office, there is also the possibility of an optional summer clerkship and a two-year attorney position practicing natural resources law with the Attorney General's Office. Order of the Coif  The Order of the Coif, the highest academic honor granted to graduates of the S.J. Quinney College of Law, is a national society founded to encourage legal scholarship and advance the ethical standards of the profession. Each year, the faculty confers membership on students who place in the highest 10 percent of their graduating class. To be eligible, a student must receive graded credit for at least three-quarters of the total number of hours required for graduation. (Under the current requirement of 88 hours, a minimum of 66 graded hours satisfies requirements regardless of how many hours a student may have accumulated prior to graduation.)

 

S.J. Quinney College of Law Outstanding Achievement Award  The Outstanding Achievement Award certificate is given in each graded course (other than seminars) with an enrollment of at least 12 students. The course professor selects the student whose work is deemed the most outstanding. In the event of a tie, the professor will attempt to select a single winner. If the selection process does not produce one winner, co-winners will be accepted (but no more than two).

 

Quinney Student Fellowship   The Quinney Fellowships provide a select group of students with outstanding academic, research and writing skills the opportunity to work closely with members of the faculty and others on a range of research, writing, and service projects. Students must work approximately 12 hours per week. They receive $2,750 per semester and a tuition benefit. (more information)

 

Quinney Top 10 % Student Scholarship  The Quinney Top 10% Scholarship is awarded in fall semester to second and third year students who are not receiving other merit scholarship or fellowship support and are performing in the top 10% of their class.  This performance is based on cumulative Quinney College of Law GPA as measured from grades posted from the previous spring semester.  They receive $2,750 for fall semester and a tuition benefit.

Robert Schmid Natural Resources Writing Award  The student who writes the best paper on a natural resources-related topic is awarded $250. The faculty nominates papers, and the Faculty Awards Committee chooses the recipient.

 

Senior Lawyer Volunteer Project Summer Internship  Utah Legal Services sponsors the Senior Lawyer Volunteer Project, which provides free legal services to low-income clients, especially the elderly. A $5,000 fellowship is awarded to a law student who has demonstrated a commitment to the elderly, and who believes a lawyer's primary responsibility is to serve the broader public interest. The intern serves as a clerk to the coordinator of the Senior Lawyer Volunteer Project. (more information)

 

Snell and Wilmer Diversity Fellowship Program  The Snell & Wilmer Diversity Fellowship Program provides an educational and training experience to a second-year law student during spring semester.  The successful candidate for the Program will be the person who, in the opinion of Snell & Wilmer will best represent groups that traditionally have had limited exposure to professional law firm settings and whose diversity and unique perspectives and skills will provide Snell & Wilmer with an experience that may not otherwise be available to the Salt Lake City Snell & Wilmer office.  The fellowship pays a $4,000 stipend.  The selection process takes place during the fall semester. Edward D. and Carol J. Spurgeon Public Interest Fellowship  This fellowship provides $5,000 to support summer employment in a low- or non-paying position with a public service office or agency. Recipients are selected by a committee that considers the student's choice of employment and long-term commitment to public service as demonstrated by academic, vocational, and public service activities. Robert W. Swenson Natural Resources Law Scholarship  The Natural Resources Law Forum, a student organization, awards an annual fellowship of $2,750 to a first- or second-year student in good standing who is a member of the organization. The recipient must demonstrate a commitment to environmental or natural resources law and a strong desire to work in the field. (more information)

 

Roger and Madeleine Traynor Scholarship for Excellence in Legal Writing and Scholarship  This scholarship is awarded annually to an advanced law student who has demonstrated distinction in legal writing and scholarship. The Faculty Awards Committee selects the recipient. (more information)
 

Stephen Pierre Traynor Legal Writing Award  The Traynor Legal Writing Award annually recognizes outstanding writing by an advanced student. The recipient receives $700 and has his or her name inscribed on the Stephen Pierre Traynor plaque. The faculty nominates student, law review, or journal papers, which, after editing, remain substantially the work of the student. The Faculty Awards Committee chooses the recipient.

 

Utah Civil Rights and Liberties Award  The $100 Utah Civil Rights and Liberties Award is given to the student who writes the best research paper in a class or seminar on the First Amendment, or in a comparable class that requires a research paper. The faculty nominates student papers and the Faculty Awards Committee chooses the recipient.

Utah State Bar Family Law Section & SJ Quinney College of Law Scholarship  The Family Law Scholarship will recognize a student who has demonstrated a commitment to and excellence in Family Law. Candidates for the award will demonstrate this through course work, clinical participation, extracurricular activities, volunteer participation and/or previous experience. The scholarship includes a $2,750 cash award and a tuition benefit. (more information)

 

Alonzo W. Watson, Jr. Scholarship  The Alonzo W. Watson, Jr. Scholarship is awarded to students with a demonstrated commitment to public service, a strong interest in public policy, and financial need.
