About the Center for Innovation in Legal Education

The S.J. Quinney College of Law has been a leader of innovation in legal education for decades. Adapting to an ever-changing legal profession, simulation based courses and real world opportunities grew as core components of the curriculum, not bonuses. The Center for Innovation in Legal Education was created to tackle the complex challenges of educating a new generation of learners shaped by technology and who must compete in a restructured global economy and legal profession. CILI, in collaboration with the College of Education and our faculty, uses educational technology, learning sciences, and new curricular formats to effectively and efficiently prepare graduates to step into a competitive market ready to work. In September 2012, the National Jurist Magazine highlighted the U as one of the most innovative and best value law schools in the country.

Projects & Research

  • Blended Learning Project

    In 2012, the Center for Innovation in Legal Education began exploring the idea of blended (also known as flipped) learning in the classroom.

  • University Law Group

    The University Law Group provides affordable legal services to low- to-moderate-income people and small businesses in our community, while providing an opportunity for newly practicing attorneys to gain practical experience. University Law Group is staffed by young attorneys who are recent University of Utah S.J. Quinney College of Law graduates.

  • S.J. Quinney College of Law Counterterrorism Simulation

    The Counterterrorism Simulation is part of Professor Guiora's class titled Global Perspectives on Counterterrorism. As part of their coursework, students in the class will participate in one of three identical simulations throughout the day on Friday, March 29, 2013. During the simulations, students will be tested on their ability to make decisions under pressure, manage information, advocate courses of action, and demonstrate leadership.
