BioLaw Project Fellowship

Fellows will be expected to play leadership roles in the development of the project.  Responsibilities will include research on cutting-edge issues in law and the biosciences, working with members of the legal community and researchers in the biosciences, grant-writing, think tank development, and conference planning. Interest and/or expertise in federal regulatory law, intellectual property law, law and bioscience, or law and medical informatics preferred.  Applicants should have a strong record of academic excellence and be willing to work collegially with project participants.

Fellowship Description

Students work directly with Professors Leslie Francis, Teneille Brown, Amelia Rinehart, and Ken Chahine on scholarship, service, and other activities.  There will be weekly group meetings which fellows will be expected to attend (either in person or on the phone) as part of their fellowship hours. Fellows will be expected to work a approximately 150 hours per semester (roughly 12 hours/week), and should be prepared to make a firm commitment to that level of time and effort.  Applicants should take into account any planned outside work or extra-curricular activities before making this commitment.  Fellows will be required to maintain and submit time records as a prerequisite to receipt of the stipend payments and tuition benefits described below.

Stipend, Tuition and Fee Waiver

2013-2014 Biolaw Fellows will receive a $3,250 per semester stipend for their work.  This stipend qualifies the students for participation in the University’s Graduate Tuition Benefit Program (“TBP”).  Under the TBP, the students will receive a partial waiver of their tuition and fees–in addition to the stipend.  The waiver is valued at approximately 30% of total resident tuition and fees for each semester the student receives the stipend (or approximately 60% of total non-resident tuition and fees). Once tuition rates are established for the 2013-2014 academic year recipients will be notified of the actual value to the TBP waivers.  Fellowship recipients will not be eligible to receive merit scholarship support during the time they are Biolaw Fellows, with an exception for those who receive merit scholarships larger than $3,250 per semester.  They will be eligible to receive the amount of their scholarship in excess of $3,250 per semester.

Student Selection Process

Biolaw Fellows will serve for one academic year.  Interested students must submit applications to the Associate Dean for Student Affairs by March 1, 2013..  Fellowship recipients will be selected Professors Leslie Francis, Teneille Brown, Amelia Rinehart, and Ken Chahine.  Criteria for selection will include demonstrated interest in health law, information technology, and law and the biosciences.  Experience in the field(s) is preferred but not essential. Fellowship awards will be announced by mid-June.  

Deadline

Complete applications and supporting materials are due to the Associate Dean Barbara Dickey by no later than March 1 at 5:00.

Application

Applicants shall submit, in electronic format (PDF or Word documents preferred), the following information and materials:

  1. A statement of interest explaining why the applicant wants to become a Biolaw Fellow, and believes she or he is particularly qualified based on demonstrated interests, abilities, and experience.
  2. The applicant’s current resume.
  3. The applicant’s current unofficial College of Law Transcript.
  4. One writing sample (from prior work at the College of Law, undergraduate or other graduate school work, or work experience) demonstrating the applicant’s research, analytical and writing skills.  The writing sample should be exclusively the product of the applicant’s work.
  5. A list of no more than 3 references (which may include faculty at the College of Law). No letters please.

Interviews:     The selection committee may, in its discretion, schedule interviews.  If so, all applicants will be provided the same interview opportunity.
