The Mediation Clinic

2nd and 3rd year students

 

      The Mediation Clinic enables students to acquire the skills of mediators through study, mock exercises, observations and actual practice in supervised settings.

           

Prerequisites: Lawyering Skills (See Civil Clinic for description) meets skills requirement.

 

Course:  Advanced Negotiation & Mediation (3 cr., graded, Fall) teaches basic negotiation theory and skills, reflective techniques and problem-solving approaches.  Students acquire the basic skills of a neutral mediator and will be able to be certified in the state of Utah as mediators.

 

Placement: (1 or 2 cr., P/F, Fall, Spring, and Summer semester) to be taken concurrently or following course.  Opportunities may include housing, discrimination, family, juvenile offender, small claims, high school conflicts and other simple disputes.

 

Faculty: Professors James Holbrook and Linda F. Smith

 

Registration & Placement: Students enroll online, first in the course and then the clinic.  Limited enrollment.  Students will be asked to complete a separate Placement Preference Form and then consult with Prof. Smith regarding their preferred placement.
